Think GREEN in Packaging Design

There’s that “green” word again. Some companies embrace it, while other’s not so much, either way it has become one of the largest buzz words in packaging in the last decade. Whether you’re just starting out on the journey to a beautiful, green package or re-vamping a once beautiful package to meet modern standards, it is important to consider a few things:

  1. Start with the basics. Know that there is no such thing as a 100% sustainable package. Going green is a journey, a journey to reducing your package’s overall impact on the environment. The goal here is to make incremental, measurable improvements over time so you can reach your big-picture, end result.
  2. Know your material. Take a look at your packaging material, are there any solutions for less waste? Can another type of plastic achieve the same look but cost you and the environment less? Can a thinner material be used? Re-evaluate your options with your technical team or your supplier.
  3. Be consistent. As sustainable metrics and standards continue to evolve, it is important to pick a program and stick with it. With all of the different tools and resources available to companies, using different tools to measure the same package may provide different results. Be consistent and make sure you are moving in the right direction in the environmental areas that are of main concern to your company.
